The Story Lab's Clare Woods announces support for NaNoWriMo:

November is nearly upon us and, like last year, Story Lab is here to support anyone who plans to participate in NaNoWriMo aka National Novel Writing Month.

If you are new to NaNoWriMo, the concept is simple. Writers from around the world pledge to write 50,000 words in the month of November. That's a mere 1,666 per day. Doable, right?

For a successful NaNoWriMo you need to:

  • commit to writing every day (or binge writing every waking second at weekends, but that isn't recommended);
  • turn off your inner editor: this month is all about getting the story out...
  • manage your expectations: you're writing a first draft. First drafts are s****y, as every writer knows, but without them we have nothing. So...
  • dial up your sense of adventure, imagine a couple of characters, put them in a room/forest/spaceship/desperate situation together, and go!

Story Lab can help you achieve your 50,000 word goal. Come write with us on Friday afternoons in the Lab from 1 - 4 PM. Other times for group writing are possible too, depending on interest.

Email me - Clare Woods at jcwoods@duke.edu - if you would like to join the Story Lab's NaNo group. Story Lab has some give-aways to help incentivize your writing and speed you through the month to success. If you would like to know more, or need help in any way with setting up an account on the NaNoWriMo website, we can hold an informal information session at noon on Friday in the Story Lab.
