AWW: America at the Margins

Duke Assistant Professor of History Justin Leroy welcomes Woody Holton, Professor of History at the University of South Carolina, to kickoff the 26/27 Atlantic Worlds Workshop Series. Holton's book, Liberty Is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution (Simon & Schuster, 2021), is "a deeply researched and bracing retelling" of the American Revolution, showing how the Founders were influenced by overlooked Americans- women, Native Americans, African Americans, and religious dissenters. Professor Holton's 2009 book, Abigail Adams, which he wrote on a Guggenheim fellowship, won the Bancroft Prize. He is the author of Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution (2007), a finalist for the George Washington Book Prize and the National Book Award. His first book, Forced Founders: Indians, Debtors, Slaves and the Making of the American Revolution in Virginia (1999), won the Organization of American Historians' Merle Curti award.
