Faculty Bookwatch | From Gas Masks to Graphic Design: Reading the Recent Work of Gennifer Weisenfeld

We invite you to join us for a Faculty Bookwatch event to highlight Gennifer Weisenfeld's recent publication, The Fine Art of Persuasion: Corporate Advertising Design, Nation, and Empire in Modern Japan, along with the two books that closely preceded it, The Complete Commercial Artist: Making Modern Design in Japan, 1928-1930, and Gas Mask Nation: Visualizing Air Defense in Wartime Japan.
Each one of Professor Weisenfeld's books is worthy of celebration on its own, but together, they demonstrate remarkable range and depth of scholarship on the relationship between visual culture, the formation of social and political identities, and processes of nation- and empire-building in Japan. We are thrilled to highlight this pathbreaking research through conversation with a group of Weisenfeld's esteemed colleagues.
Co-hosted by the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute (FHI) and the Duke University Libraries, Faculty Bookwatch is a program that celebrates and promotes interdisciplinary conversations on major recent books by Duke humanities or interpretive social sciences faculty.
