FHI, Black Archival Imagination Lab | Translating Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s Legacy into the Future: A Conversation with James Ogude and Wangui wa Goro Moderated by Tsitsi Jaji
For over 6 decades Ngugi wa Thiong'o shaped the contours of African literature. His work crossed the boundaries between genres and languages showing us that his first language, Gikuyu, was as fitting a home for literature as English. When he passed away on May 25 -- Africa Day - he left a matchless legacy as a novelist, playwright, essayist, editor, translator, literary critic and political activist. In this public conversation, Prof. James Ogude (author of Ngugi's Novels and African History: Narrating the Nation) and Prof. Wangui wa Goro (translator of Matigari) will reflect on what Ngugi's work has meant over the decades, and what it has to say to us in the present moment, not yet Uhuru.
