Job Opportunity: Work Study Students, Audiovisual & Events Support

The Franklin Humanities Institute has openings for three (3) undergraduate student employees to provide event support during the Fall and Spring academic semester. Work schedules will be set at the beginning of the semester, with possible hours between 9:00am and 9:00pm M-F. Students will be requested to work rotating Saturdays between 9:00am and 12:00pm, usually amounting to about once a semester.

Work Performed

Event Logistic and AV Support (60%)

  • Monitor activities in the FHI’s Ahmadieh Family Lecture Hall event space, Conference Room, and, on occasion, Humanities Labs, located in Bay 4 of the Smith Warehouse
  • Provide support for patrons utilizing the audiovisual system, which includes a digital projector, wireless microphones, and laptop computer hook-ups
  • Ensure FHI’s rooms are secure after events when possible
  • Report technical malfunctions encountered using A/V equipment in the Garage
  • Receive and monitor catering orders, pack up leftovers, clean up food area for FHI-organized events

Event Prep and Planning (40%)

  • Assist with room setup and arrangement
  • Provide support for FHI's social media presence (Instagram, Facebook, etc.)
  • Create signage and posters to advertise events
  • Post advertising posters throughout campus
  • Remove old flyers from bulletin boards
  • Deliver manuscripts to Duke professors
  • Assist in drafting guest itineraries
  • Possibility for other tasks as needed

The ideal candidates will...

  • Need to be a willing to learn to use basic functions of the FHI’s AV systems. No prior technical knowledge in this area is required, but can be beneficial
  • Candidate should have some familiarity with using Mac computers
  • Candidate should not be intimidated by learning how to use new technology
  • Dependably show up for scheduled shifts
  • Weeknight and weekend availability required
  • Familiarity with PowerPoint and/or Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) is not required, but will be considered a plus
