Sport Working Group, 2011-12

Conveners: Claire Conceison (Theater Studies), Orin Starn (Cultural Anthropology), John Thompson (History)

The FHI interdisciplinary working group on sport was created in 2010 to foster intellectual discourse among faculty across disciplines who do research and teach on sport , as well as to foster dialogue between athletics and academics at Duke. Our members come from programs and departments including the Law School, Kenan Institute of Ethics, Anthropology, History, Theater Studies, Women's Studies, Asian Studies, African American Studies, and the Department of Athletics. Our events include guest speakers, discussions about new scholarship, and public panels.

In addition to the public events listed in the right side bar, group co-convenershave organized a number of guest lectures for their undergraduate courses (Orin Starn's Anthropology of Sports and Claire Conceison's Sports as Performance). Topics include head trauma (Oct 27, Starn), race and baseball (Nov 1, Starn), global soccer (Nov 7, Conceison). Space is limited due to classroom size - please contact Profs. Conceison and Starn if you are interested.
