Cosplay with Duke Story Lab!
Cosplay is a unique form of embodied storytelling that showcases the passion that fans have while celebrating their favorite storyworlds! Whether it is exploring the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the magical realms of Lord of the Rings trilogy, die hard fans can create some of the most creative costumes to look like their favorite characters. But what happens if fans don't look anything like their favorite characters? Can an African-American get away with playing as Thor from the Avengers? What happens when cosplaying allows for breaking away from the body norms that are celebrated in entertainment, namely media-generated beauty standards with usually Caucasian skin? Students at Duke University gather together to make their own costumes as Prof. Eileen Chow facilitates a conversation to ask those very questions. Video by Eric Barstow.
