Mediterranean Mediations with Iain Chambers and Lidia Curti
Iain Chambers, "Mediterranean Blues: Thinking With the Diver" In this talk, organized around the famous painting of the diver in the Paestum archaeological museum, Prof. Chambers proposed a cutting up of time and the reassembling of its elements in the urgency of a contemporary constellation. This permits the tearing and perforation of the maps authorized by accredited disciplines and their framing and explanation: from geography and anthropology to history and sociology. Here the prospects of other languages, both musical and visual, enforce the critical imperative of the anachronism that subtracts the Mediterranean from a reductive objectivity in order to think with the unfolding possibilities of an altogether more fluid archive.
Lidia Curti, "Diasporic Female Narratives: Crossing the Mediterranean, Rewriting Italy" Through listening to the literary and artistic narratives arriving from the southern shores of the Mediterranean, this paper considers the return of European colonialism, particularly Italian, in the ongoing cultural (and political) constitution of the present. Here a singular understanding of European modernity falls away in the multiple complexity sustained by female bodies in their movement through language, senses and belonging, and their insistence to exist.
About the speakers:
Iain Chambers teaches cultural, postcolonial and Mediterranean studies at the University of Naples Orientale. He is founder of the Centre for Postcolonial and Gender Studies and the seminar series «Borderscapes» in the same institution. His more recent publications include Mediterranean Crossings (2008), Mediterraneo blues (2012), Postcolonial Interruptions, Unauthorised Modernities (2017), Location, borders and beyond (2018) and La Questione Mediterranea (2019).
Lidia Curti is Honorary Professor of English Studies at the University of Naples Orientale. She is a cultural critic and a feminist, and co-founder of the research group “Feminist Futures” at the Centre for Postcolonial and Gender Studies. Among her publications are Female stories, female bodies (1998), La voce dell’altra (2018) and the co-editorship of The Postcolonial Question (1996). Her more recent interests in Italian diasporic literature, migration in artistic practices and female genealogies in feminist contemporary theory have been elaborated in such essays as “Transcultural itineraries” (2011), “Voices of a Minor Empire” (2011), “Literary Citizenship and Migrating Belongings” (2015), and “Towards a Tentacular Coexistence. Speculative Fictions and Feminist Futures (2018).
